The Draft
Based on my birthday, I would not have been drafted in the Vietnam war. This is because, men from working-class and disadvantaged backgrounds made up the majority of American soldiers enlisted during the Vietnam War (Lupton, 2022). These young men lacked political connections, a family physician who could grant them a medical deferment, the ability to secure a college deferment, or any of those things. A deferral postponed a man’s eligibility for induction for the majority of the Vietnam War if he was a college student. These deferments appear to have been a successful, if not ideal, strategy to escape military service, according to subjective and statistical proof.
A popular song served as a catalyst for the movement to reduce the voting age to coincide with the draft age as a growing number of young men were drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. For American males between the ages of 19 and 25, who were considered eligible to be recruited during the war, 50 years ago, was immediately relieving (Lupton, 2022). It also established an arbitrary but enduring distinction between the almost 2 million males who had been conscripted and those who could avert induction by turning 19 after the beginning of 1973. The current status of the draft is unavailable. Men were recruited from 1948 until 1973, at the times of war and peace to join armed forces that were unable to be filled other voluntarily.
In future, the draft may be used again. Since 1973, every member of the American military is a volunteer. In the event of a national emergency, however, a law passed by Congress may still bring back the draft. Men are registered with the Selective Service System, which also oversees the draft (Lupton, 2022). Also, two questions determine the future of the draft and how to sign up for it. One concerns how women should be viewed, but the main issue is how registration should be viewed.
