My Culture and how it Addresses Violence

Cuban culture is a mixture of contradicting, different factors and influences. As Cubans, we are influenced by our customs which are grounded on European, Amerindian, and African influences. Cubans highly value family life and etiquette (Purnell et al., 2021). The criminal law of Cuba acknowledges the value of defending the rights of the defendant, such as the expectation of an impartial trial, the access to legal counsel, and a presumption of innocence. In addition to outlawing all forms of violence, involving torturing and inhumane, degrading, or degrading treatment or punishment, the criminal law also ensures the right to a fair trial. Cubans, however, do not recognize any particular type of violence against women outside of general harm or danger. Attack victims frequently fail to report their attacks, which makes it difficult for investigators to look into such situations (Purnell et al., 2019). Due to their financial dependence of their marital partners—a condition made worse by the economic crisis—many Cuban women believe they are unable to report acts of violence.

The Best Way for a Therapist to bring up the Issues of Abuse and Violence

Counseling with both victims and perpetrators of family violence requires the ability to create a strong therapeutic partnership, which includes a link that is warm and unconditionally welcoming as well as agreement on the process’ objectives (Fidler & Bala, 2020). The therapist must set an example of respecting and safeguarding the client’s self-determination, as well as their mental and physical limits. This entails educating the client about the service being supplied, accepting their ambiguity on whether to remain in a relationship or end it, and supporting their own understanding of their circumstances, worries, and objectives.

When domestic abuse and violence do not correspond to the concerns the family has acknowledged, I believe there are numerous actions that should be addressed. I must first realize that my responsibility is to listen to them. Most families find it embarrassing to discuss these difficulties (Fidler & Bala, 2020). I have to make an effort to comprehend what they might be thinking. There are a few ways I can start the dialogue. I am free to make the decision that best suits my connection with my family. I can bring up the subject in a third-person fashion by saying, “I recently saw a documentary about domestic abuse and they spoke. Give them a chance to speak after starting the conversation, then pay attention to what they have to say.  It is also wise to employ “Active Listening,” in which I listen with the intent for comprehension rather than with the intent to respond.

During the talk, there are a total of three important items to convey. I may express my belief in what they’re expressing and my worry for them. I will refrain from challenging what they say. Avoid asking “why” questions since they suggest fault. They can be reminded that what is taking place is illegal and that the perpetrator is accountable (Fidler & Bala, 2020). Asking them what counsel they would provide to their closest friend in their predicament can be useful. I can let them understand how this alters their emotional outlook. Consistently end the dialogue with a question that leaves room for further discussion and avoids cutting it off. if they say, “No, everything is fine,” When wrapping up a session, a therapist can say something like, ” Should there ever something you need of assistance, give me a call.”
