Nursing Theorist Video reflection

Over thirty years ago, Dr Jean Watson introduced the Theory of Human Caring into the nursing profession. According to the theory, caring is an essential element of nursing and all nurses are obliged to provide the best environment that will enable healing among the patients (Pajnkihar, et al., 2017). Jean Watson’s theory of Caring Video presents a detailed explanation on the life of Dr Watson and her intentions of formulating the Human Caring Theory. It also provides a comprehensive understanding on the variables that make up the theory.

Watson offers effective insights that support the need to unsure that the nursing profession is served in a humanistic nature and guided by science. I chose to watch Watson’s video since she is keen in dissecting the theory of human behavior into its basic components and provides more explanation on the relevance of the components in the field of nursing. The concepts are relevant in critical care nursing where there is need for more conventional knowledge (Yeter Durgun Ozan, 2015). The special care addressed in the video is a vital component in all the nursing engagements. Watson aims to ensure that individuals enhance both the art and scientific components of nursing. The video gives comprehensive information that ensures nursing is guided by special care and directed by knowledge.

From my own philosophy I think that human beings are entitled to care and nurses should provide all the effective measures of ensuring quality care. I totally agree with Watson’s concept on human beings as subjects of the caring process. Watson States, “the nurse considers the person to be valid and whole, regardless of illness or disease” (Yeter Durgun Ozan, 2015). In one of the clinical caritas processes, Watson addresses this concept when she argued that nurses have to create and provide healing environments at all levels to ensure that the patients are healed. Healing environments can be physical or nonphysical depending on the nature of care (Pham, 2012). It is important for nurses to ensure that their professions are endorsed with care.

With a proper care theory, nurses are at a better place of handling patients more diligently. I agree with Watson’s concepts which includes the mental, social and physical functioning of the body as it relates to receptiveness of nursing care. Watson’s theory focuses on the belief that holistic healthcare should be practiced and is needed to ensure adequate provision of nursing care (Pajnkihar, et al., 2017). Nursing is inclined to treating or preventing illness and restoring health or removing illness. I think that Watson uses the concept of practicing love and kindness to demonstrate the global concepts of providing care. The definition of nursing care becomes clearer after integrating the care theory and nurses are able to understand what is expected of them. Therefore, Watson’s concepts are useful in guaranteeing that nurses provide effective care.

What surprised me in the video is how Watson was able to expand the caritas processes from the original curative factors and how she reflected them with her personal evolution. The processes offer the tenets of establishing care in a professional manner, a means of practicing care in a loving and spiritual manner (Yeter Durgun Ozan, 2015). Watson explains how the transpersonal relationship can go beyond oneself and create a change in the nursing environment. From my own understanding, caregivers are aware of their own intentions in a transpersonal relationship and they are able to perform care that emanates of their hearts. This can be expounded by Watson’s belief that a transpersonal relationship enhances the association between souls and healing can take place as a result of the authentic relationship and optimal caring (Pham, 2012). Thus, when nurses are more cautious of themselves and their surroundings, they can act from a place of love at each caring moment.

I would recommend this video to another student since it clearly elaborates Watson’s original ideas on curative factors. The Theory of Human Caring has been presented in a straightforward manner and can be understood easily by a student. Besides Watson’s the, themes being clearly presented, they are also based on other disciplines that make it easier to understand. Further, the video presents Watson’s definition of caring along with the curative factors that provide guidelines on how to deliver nursing care (Pham, 2012). Students can internalize the concepts and integrate them into their caring activities and practices (Norman, Rossillo, & Skelton, 2016). Due to the eclectic nature of Watson’s theory, the video enhances critical thinking among students making it easier to interpret and understand. Therefore, this video will be of great importance to enhance the understanding of care and how it is integrated to the normal life.

Watching the video has been of great value since it has enabled me to understand how Watson’s theory can be applied in the nursing profession. Watson’s theory can be applied in many disciplines besides nursing since it focuses on provision of care in general (Yeter Durgun Ozan, 2015). By understanding Watson’s theory individuals can ensure care becomes a part and parcel of their day to day life. It is through experiences that the importance of love and care can be realized. It is also an important model to be used in healthcare since its concepts are easier to be comprehended. Additionally, Watson’s video is of great value since it addresses concepts that create a healing environment at all levels, enable caring relation relationships and sustain the deep belief of compassion and sensitivity towards other people. Therefore, this video provides a theory that is conspicuously eloquent on the need to provide care in every situation that human beings encounter.

In conclusion the video on Watson’s Theory of Human Caring addresses a set of unique values and practices that can help in the healing process if implemented in the nursing profession. The video presents Watson’s ideas administering care and building effective relationships to promote an efficient nursing environment.  Addressed in a clear language that can be understood by the viewers, the video provides a better understanding of the theory of human caring and how it can be integrated in life. The theory promotes the healing process whether it is emotional, physical or spiritual. Therefore, individuals can learn and grasp a lot of knowledge on human caring by watching Jean Watson’s theory of Caring Video.
