Question 1: Silence is not an Option

In the podcast show, Silence is Not an Option, David Axelrod hosts Nikole Hannah-Jones as they talk about her life while growing up in working-class Iowa, how she created the 1619 Project, and her motivation after being underestimated. Several chapters in the class textbook relate to the discussion in the textbook. Chapter 10 is one of the major chapters relating to the podcast discussion since it points out several aspects of global inequality. The specific areas connected to the show include Global Stratification and Cold war Terminology. According to the textbook, global stratification is the unequal distribution among countries (Conerly et al., 2021). Most people are accustomed to thinking that global stratification means economic inequality. Discrimination and poverty can lead to economic inequality within nations. This section is related to what Axelrod and Jones discuss concerning racial inequality that existed in the United States. As Jones explains, as a result of racial inequality some races especially African Americans were discriminated against in employment and wage (CNN, 2020).  The Cold war Terminology talks about the development of cold war terminology during the cold war and how countries were classified according to living standards and economic development. Countries like the United States which were capitalist democracies were viewed as the first world. U.S can also be classified as the fourth world where minority groups were stigmatized by being denied political voices. This is related to what Jones talks about in the podcast when she states that she was denied a chance to publish books due to her being a woman of color.

Another chapter that is related to the podcast discussion is chapter 11 which focuses on race and ethnicity. The specific areas in the chapter include Racial, Ethnic, and Minority Groups, Prejudice, Discrimination, Racism, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States. In the Racial, Ethnic, and Minority Groups section, the authors talk about minority groups. According to them, minority groups are distinguished in terms of the color of their skin and language, unequal treatment, and involuntary membership (Conerly et al., 2021). In the podcast, Jones argues that African Americans were significantly oppressed and exploited in the past through her personal experience (CNN, 2020). This shows that African Americans belonged to a minority group. The textbook also talks about multiple identities and how racial intermarriage was illegal and race before the 20th century. Jones states that she was a product of racial intermarriage since her mother was White and her father Black. She also argues that her mother encountered many legal challenges due to the marriage. In the Prejudice, Discrimination, and Racism section, the authors talk about prejudice, types of discrimination, and racial tensions. As Jones argues in the podcast, as an African American she has experienced many stereotypes and discrimination related to her racial group. For instance, while growing up in Iowa, she became more aware of inequities in society in terms of work, education, and housing (CNN, 2020). She also continues to face different kinds of racism towards black people.

Chapter 16 is also related to the podcast show in some areas. One specific area related to the podcast discussion is Issues in Education. One of the major issues is equal education. Before the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, in 1954, schools were private businesses and racially segregated (Conerly et al., 2021). This is related to what Jones and Axelrod talk about in the podcast show concerning unequal education in the past. Jones states that even though she attended the most privileged white schools in the country, she was racially segregated as she would not mix with white students in class or even visit her white friends after school (CNN, 2020). The textbook states that there is still significant inequality in the United States education system that results from the socially embedded impacts of discrimination and racism. Even though students of all races currently attend the same schools, students from minority groups still experience inequality.

Question 2: The New York Times Magazine 1619 Project

An article I chose to analyze is “The Legacy of Slavery in America” written by Anne Bailey. This article relates to chapter 16 of the textbook which talks about race and ethnicity in the United States. Specifically, the history of African Americans has been discussed in detail in this chapter. The book states that African Americans are among the minority groups in the United States who did not arrive in the country by choice. The first Africans were brought to the United States by a Dutch sea captain and sold as slaves to the Virginia colony (Conerly et al., 2021). For more than 150 years there was a significant rise in slavery in the United States since more Africans were kidnapped and taken as slaves. This is related to what Bailey talks about in the article especially when she talks about the story of Sarah Elizabeth Adams and the significant growth in cotton production after the American Revolution that lead to the intensified need for enslaved workers to work in the plantations (Bailey, 2019). Thus, as a result of slavery, the African American population grew in the U.S.

The article by Anne Bailey provides a history of slavery experience in the United States. In the article, Bailey first highlights the story of Sarah Elizabeth Adams and her experience of slavery. The article also talks about the domestic slavery that took place in the U.S during the 18th century (Bailey, 2019). However, most slaves were freed and slavery ended after the Civil War and Emancipation. Bailey also argues that there is a need to provide a full account of American history to ensure that the experiences of enslaved are not forgotten. What Bailey does not highlight in her article is a full account of how Black people fought for their freedom including the critical figures who contributed to their freedom. Bailey should include more information about the impacts of slavery on African Americans and why this minority group still faces major inequalities, discrimination, and oppression up to date.

Some of the problems identified in the podcast include racial discrimination and inequality. In the podcast show, Jones talks about how she has experienced discrimination due to her race over many years. Along with Axelrod, they argue about inequalities that have embedded different sectors in the United States including education and employment. To address these issues, I propose two solutions including the formulation of policies and education (CNN, 2020). There is a need for the government and other institutions to collaborate and come up with effective policies to help fight racial discrimination and inequality in the country. These policies can be in form of programs and legislations that are directed toward eliminating these issues. Education will also significantly help in reducing racial inequality and discrimination. Different strategies can be created including social media campaigns, civic education, and incorporation of racial studies in the school curriculum.

I believe that the United States is a nation that is truly built on immigrants and the land of the free. This is because approximately 50% of the American population are immigrants and they significantly contribute to the economy of the country. Nonetheless, I believe that America is the land of the free. The United States was founded on freedom and as time progressed, the country became the most diverse with different races and ethnicities. Migrants are relocating to the U.S to enjoy their life decisions and live freely. America is thus a welcoming and free land guided by equality and liberty to embrace the culture and accept people of other ethnicities. I think that the first immigrants to the U.S were Asians followed by Europeans led by French and Spanish who established settlements in the country during the 1500s. This is because many years before Europeans started crossing the Atlantic Asian immigrants had settled in North America. They became the ancestors of the Native Americans who crossed into America during the period of the last Ice Age.
